Hair Disorders
Hair loss can result from hereditary disease, fungal infection, mechanical breakage, or diseases that destroy the hair follicle itself. Medication and generalized systemic illness can also cause hair problems. Some common diagnoses are alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness).
Nail Disorders
Nails may become yellow or thickened
due to trauma, aging, fungal infections, yeast infections, or improper
nail care. The fungal and yeast diseases are treated with a combination
of topical and oral medications. There are several agents available
to us that strengthen nails and make them grow more rapidly. These
include Biotin in high doses and several topical agents.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disorder characterized
by thick scaly plaques that may occur anywhere on the body. Available
treatments include topical cortisone, tar soaks and creams, Dovonex,
Tazorac, phototherapy with PUVA and narrow band UVB, oral retinoids
(Soriatane), and chemotherapy (Methotrexate). The newest developments
available to treat plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis are injectable
Biologics (Enbrel, Humira, Raptiva) and even laser to treat persistent
plaques.
Skin Cancer
Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell
carcinoma, and malignant melanoma are all types of skin cancer.
The physician determines appropriate treatment for each type and
a surgical excision may be performed. Cryosurgery or electrodessication
may also be appropriate treatment for some lesions. Occasionally,
skin cancers require special treatment and patients may be referred
to a surgeon who performs MOHS surgery.
